PR: The Way Forward?

Having to watch a third rate leader of a third rate party prostitute
himself to the highest bidder is more than a little disconcerting, and does nothing to enhance the broken, corrupt image of politics in this country.
Personally, I have mixed feelings about proportional representation. The current ‘first past the post’ system usually provides decisive Government, good or bad, but too often in recent history it has given the controlling party licence to indulge in their own spiteful politics. We should never forget Thatcher destroying our coal industry to get revenge on the miners who toppled Ted Heath, nor should Blair and Brown ever be forgiven for flooding our country with an immigrant invasion to (in the words of Blair advisor Andrew Neather) ‘rub the rights noses in it’.
This is not the way politics should be conducted, and the clamour for a change in the system is quite understandable. Even though a FAIR system of PR would possibly benefit the British National Party, I am not over enthusiastic about the weak Governments that would result, and watching the shenanigans of the last couple of days, which would become a regular occurrence, has done nothing to enamour me to the prospect.
However, it looks as though Clegg and his Lib Dims are grabbing their opportunity, and some form of PR will be put to a referendum (although past broken promises and cast iron guarantees suggest we shouldn’t take anything for granted).
What form of PR will they go for? Now, there’s the rub. I would be inclined to think they will want something that is designed to keep the BNP out, but in doing so will it also freeze out other smaller parties?
For instance, if they imposed a lower limit, say 15%, then all the smaller parties would suffer with only the big three getting elected.
Whatever the outcome, here’s something that caught my eye on Cllr Cliff Ropers Blog that certainly highlights the injustice of the present system:
Democratic Unionist Party 8 MPs from 168,216 votes
Scottish National Party 6 MPs from 491,386 votes
Sinn Fein 5 MPs from 171,942 votes
Plaid 3 MPs from 165,394 votes
Social Dem Labour Party 3 MPs from 110,970 votes
Green Party 1 MP from 285,616 votes
Alliance Party 1 MP from 42,762 votes
British National Party 0 MPs from 563,743 votes
Certainly food for thought.
