Islamic Extremism is under-reported in Derbyshire

It should be a huge concern to everyone in Derbyshire that our Police force is one of the most under funded forces in the country next to the duties it has to carry out. Continued under-funding of Derbyshire Police could mean the force’s ability to continue to fund counter-terrorism collaboration will be vulnerable, meaning the Police won’t have the ability to call on special operations units as often as they’d like.
Derbyshire Police has already undergone a huge restructure recently to make the force leaner. The efficiency savings will see Amber Valley’s main Police HQ move from Ripley to Chesterfield, the Chief Constable maintains that backroom office cuts won’t affect frontline services. For Derbyshire’s sake I hope he’s right, because reports of Islamic extremism have been rising year on year. It should be born in mind that the UK’s first suicide bomber came from Derby and areas within the Peak District have been used for training purposes. The latest police figures we have, show an estimated 2800 reports of Islamic extremism in Derbyshire during 2008. The rising trend on the graph shown to us suggests today’s figures could be much higher. There remains a high level of counter-terrorist activity within Derbyshire which clearly impacts on normal policing issues.
